2019 NFL Draft rankings: Deionte Thompson leads safety group

The Indianapolis Colts have an opportunity to build on their young defense this offseason and one position they should be looking at heavily is the safety position.

With an abundance of salary cap space, the Colts could add a veteran safety in free agency. They could also look to address the position in the 2019 NFL Draft as there seem to be some solid prospects.

In Draft Wire’s rankings for the safety position, here is a look at the top 10 as it stands now:

  1. Deionte Thompson, Alabama
  2. Taylor Rapp, Washington
  3. Nasir Adderley, Delaware
  4. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Florida
  5. Amani Hooker, Iowa
  6. Juan Thornhill, Virginia
  7. Jaquan Johnson, Miami (FL)
  8. Marquise Blair, Utah
  9. Johnathan Abram, Mississippi State
  10. Darnell Savage, Jr, Maryland

The Colts are likely looking for a running mate to go alongside Malik Hooker. Given Hooker’s skillset, the Colts are looking for a safety that can play a deep-half of the field but one that can also play in the box or as a dime safety.

There will be plenty of opportunities to address the position this offseason and should the Colts want to use a relatively early pick on the position, these are some names to keep in mind.
