Can Preston Williams overcome the assumptions teams have about him?

The 2019 NFL draft is fast approaching and former Colorado State wide receiver Preston Williams should find himself on an NFL roster during this season. He has the talent and skills to compete at the next level. Williams just needs to overcome the lazy and doesn’t care about football assumptions that have been made about him.

Strengths

Preston Williams is a long, lanky receiver who has the physical traits to become a star receiver in the NFL. He’s a tall receiver with the measurables (height, arm length, and hand size) to become a team’s favorite red zone target. Williams has an almost unhuman catch radius and shows great awareness near the sidelines to make the drag with his trailing foot.

Weaknesses

Despite having long arms and decent hands, Williams has a tendency to allow the ball to come into his body. At times during the season Preston was maddeningly inconsistent. He would make an unbelievable catch one play and then drop a simple throw the next. Williams has a tendency to rely on his size against press coverage instead of fight through it. It might have worked against Mountain West competition, but he’ll have to work on it at the next level.

Draft Prediction

Williams has first round talent, according to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller. Miller compares him to Mack Hollins, of the Philadelphia Eagles. While Lance Zierlein, of the NFL Network, compares him to Martavis Bryant. However, Williams has character and injury concerns that are giving teams pause.

Williams will either be a day three pick or a priority free agent.
