2019 NFL Draft: Potential Giants target Montez Sweat has heart condition

Mississippi State defensive end Montez Sweat absolutely dominated at the 2019 NFL Combine, catapulting his already strong 2019 NFL Draft stock into the stratosphere. But the same event that propelled him forward may also now hold him back.

Multiple reports surfaced on Sunday that doctors at the NFL Combine took an extended look at Sweat during his physical because of a previously undisclosed heart condition.

At least one other player was sent home from the combine this year because of a health concerns, but doctors ultimately determined that Sweat’s heart condition was low-risk and allowed him to participate.

“Because of privacy issues we are not allowed to comment specifically. But I will tell you that this is not news. Montez is the same person that was medically cleared to play and dominate the SEC, the Senior Bowl, and the NFL combine. No change in health and no change in domination,” Sweat’s agents told NFL.com.

How this news changes a team’s approach to Sweat remains unclear, but with picks No. 6 and No. 17 in the first round, the New York Giants, who are in desperate need or pass rushers, may need to monitor Sweat more closely.

At 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, Sweat is a monster defender and his 4.41 40-yard dash is almost unbelievable. But any condition that could potentially end an NFL career early is enough to give teams pause.
