2019 NFL Draft: Jonah Williams is a Giants-type of player

If Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was in this year’s NFL Draft, he would likely be the top player at his position if not the first overall player selected.

Last Friday at the Tropicana Atlantic City, Tagovaiola was the recipient of the prestigious Maxwell Award, which is handed out by the Maxwell Football Club each year to the nation’s top college football player.

Tagovailoa, who most NFL teams including the New York Giants would love to draft,  is not eligible for this April’s draft but many of his teammates are, most notably offensive tackle Jonah Williams.

Tua knows Williams well having been the beneficiary of his blocking. Jonah Williams is first round talent that could find himself being taken in the top ten in this draft.

The Giants, holders of the sixth pick, could show some interest. Tagovailoa spoke highly of Williams in his season with the media.

“His film speaks for itself. I’ll say off the field, not just on the field, but you’re going to get a person who is really encouraging. Someone who is going to go out there and work really hard. And someone who is willing to push his teammates as well,” Tagovailoa said. “Jonah…Jonah plays like a beast but off the field, he’s like a teddy bear. He does all the things you want and expect a leader to do. He’s been a great teammate for the past two years that I’ve had him.”

The Giants could certainly use Williams, who would surely start immediately at their vacant right tackle spot. The best case scenario would be if Williams could eventually supplant veteran Nate Solder at left tackle.

Williams (6-foot-4, 302 pounds) has been compared to Atlanta Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews who was a 2018 Pro Bowl selection.
