2019 NFL draft: Jets tried to reacquire 2nd-round pick from Colts

When the Jets looked to trade up into the second round of the 2019 NFL draft, they were targeting a very familiar pick.

The Jets tried to trade up to the Colts’ No. 34 overall pick, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini and the Dailt News’ Manish Mehta. It’s the same pick the Jets traded away to the Colts last season to move up to No. 3 and draft Sam Darnold. They were unsuccessful, though, and the Colts ended up taking Temple cornerback Rock Ya-Sin with the pick.

Without a second-round selection, it would have been tough for the Jets to move all the way up from the third round. In all likelihood, it would have cost at least both of their picks in the third (Nos. 68 and 98), and potentially more to make the jump.

Offensive line and cornerback are huge needs for the Jets, so they were probably looking for one of the top players at either position. Eight of the first nine picks of the second round have been either defensive backs or lineman.

The Jets took Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams No. 3 overall after failing to trade back in the first round.

There are plenty of quality players left on the board for the Jets, but they may have to wait a little longer before being able to grab another player.
