2019 NFL draft: Jets take Rutgers CB Blessuan Austin with sixth-round pick

With the 196th pick of the 2019 NFL draft, the Jets added to their cornerback corps with the selection of Rutgers cornerback Blessuan Austin.

The selection of Austin gives the Jets some much-needed cornerback depth. Opposite of Trumaine Johnson, New York lacks a true No. 2 corner. Austin was solid in coverage on the outside for Rutgers and if it weren’t for injuries, likely would’ve gone higher than the sixth round.

As a sophomore, Austin made 41 tackles, 14 pass breakups one sack and intercepted one pass in 11 starts. Heading into 2017, he was a blossoming prospect, but a torn ACL suffered four games into the year put him out for the duration of the season.

In 2018, Austin re-injured his knee in Rutgers’ season-opener against Texas State. Instead of seeking a redshirt to remain in Piscataway for another year, Austin entered the 2019 NFL draft.
