2019 NFL draft: Jets pass on an edge rusher in Todd McShay’s latest mock

With the combine coming to an end, ESPN’s draft expert, Todd McShay. released his latest mock draft.

He has Kyler Murray going to the Arizona Cardinals, which allows Nick Bosa to fall in the laps of the 49ers. With that, the Jets would be fortunate to be picking between Kentucky’s Josh Allen and Alabama’s Quinnen Williams. McShay has the Jets picking the latter.

Passing on Allen must mean McShay expects the Jets to address the pass-rush in free agency, which could very well happen. Either way, Williams would be the best player available on the board.

Here’s McShay’s explanation:

The Jets need defensive linemen for new coordinator Gregg Williams, and the Alabama tackle fits perfectly as an interior pass-rusher who also can stop the run. Williams was incredible at the combine, and his quick first step would be a force on the inside for Gang Green.

Improving the pass-rush is the Jets’ top priority once free agency begins next week. New York has enough cap space to sign multiple high-end pass-rushers on the market.

Leonard Williams is expected to start at the three-technique in Gregg Williams’ defense, but the Jets are still missing a man in the middle with Mike Pennel released and Steve McLendon not expected back.

The two Williams would create a complementary force on the Jets defensive front, allowing it to come together with a combination of power and speed.

Quinnen Williams may not be the popular selection, but there is no doubt that he is one of the best players in this draft. If the Jets don’t see a need with Allen and they’re unable to reach a deal to trade back, Williams isn’t a bad consolation prize.
