2019 NFL draft: Jets get C+ for Trevon Wesco pick

The Jets were looking to add a complementary tight end to Chris Herndon and they found one in West Virginia tight end Trevon Wesco.

New York originally had the No. 105 pick, but made deals with the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans to ultimately move down to No. 121 and select Wesco.

Wesco was a three-year player at West Virginia, but really only played in his senior season. In the previous two seasons, he appeared in only two games. However, when Wesco saw playing time, he made the most of it with 26 receptions for 366 yards and a touchdown.

Wesco is a player with a ton of versatility. He is possibly the best blocking tight end in this year’s draft. He can also line up all over the field out wide or as an H-Back, which adds to his value. Wesco also has special teams experience and will see a lot of time there with the Jets as a rookie.

Brian Baldinger of NFL Network believes that Wesco is baby Rob Gronkowski. Wesco certainly has the size at 6-foot-3 and 267 pounds, but his ball skills are a major question mark.

The Jets needed another blocking tight end on the roster. Entering the draft, all they had was Eric Tomlinson, who is coming off an injury. It might’ve been a little early to snag a blocking tight end, but clearly, the Jets see value in Wesco.

With his blocking abilities, Wesco could be a big help to Sam Darnold and Le’Veon Bell right off the bat. As he develops, he’ll have the opportunity to take on a bigger role in the passing game.

Grade: C+
