2019 NFL draft: Jets get B- for Chuma Edoga pick

The Jets finally added some help at tackle after only addressing the interior offensive line during free agency.

The Jets struck a deal with the Minnesota Vikings to move up one spot from No. 92 to No. 93. New York also sent a seventh-round selection (No. 217 overall) to the Vikings in order to obtain Chuma Edoga.

A four-year starter at the University of Southern California, Edoga earned himself a Senior Bowl invite. He has versatility on the offensive line, being able to play both tackle positions.

Another positive is that he was teammates with Sam Darnold and was his starting right tackle when Darnold played for the Trojans.

NFL.com has compared Edoga to Jets current starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum. Edoga will have every opportunity to compete with both Beachum and Brandon Shell during training camp, but he is a project and will need a year before he can be considered ready to take on a starting job.

Edoga is a smooth, athletic run-blocker, but he needs refining as far as pass-protection comes, that’s what makes him a project and not a plug-and-play starter.

The Jets checked off another need on the box and have done nothing but upgrade their roster since Day 1. Edoga fills a need, but the Jets, who need immediate help at several positions, are getting a tackle who needs some refining before he can step into an NFL starting lineup

To become a successful NFL starter, Edoga needs to be able to develop strength and durability as early as possible.

Grade: B-
