2019 NFL draft instant analysis: Quinnen Williams has potential to become a force on Jets’ defensive line

The Jets just got a whole lot beefier up front.

With the selection of Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, New York’s front-three feature a behemoth lineup of Leonard Williams, Henry Anderson and now, Quinnen. He’ll be the best interior defensive lineman the Jets have seen since Damon Harrison and there’s a chance he becomes a bona fide star for the Jets. Williams earned a 96.0 Pro Football Focus grade, the highest ever for a collegiate interior defender.

Williams is a monster in the middle and will immediately solidify New York’s defensive line. He is incredibly young (22 in December), agile and technically sound interior lineman who many believed was the best prospect in the entire 2019 draft class.

Though Williams only started one season at Alabama, it was a prolific one. He finished with eight sacks, 19.5 tackles for a loss and 55 quarterback pressures, which was first in the nation. There’s a concern Williams might not be big enough in the middle to take on double teams, but he has the athleticism to cut through lineman and the technique to get behind the line of scrimmage.

This is a tremendous pick for the future of the Jets defense, and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams gets a player he can turn into his version of Aaron Donald.
