2019 NFL Draft: How Day 3 is panning out for Patriots

The New England Patriots enter the third day of the 2019 NFL Draft with seven selections left to make after picking five players over the first two days and first three rounds. Here’s a look at the selections so far.

First round: Arizona State receiver N’Keal Harry
Second round:Vanderbilt cornerback Joejuan Williams
Third round: Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich
Third round: Alabama running back Damien Harris
Third round: West Virginia tackle Yodny Cajuste

The Patriots started the draft with needs at tight end, receiver, defensive end, tackle and, perhaps, a backup quarterback. They’ve checked a few of those boxes, with tight end still being the most glaring need. And it’s hard to imagine they can find a day one starter in the fourth round.

Here are the picks that they have left, starting the day.

Fourth round: Picks 118, 133, 134
Seventh round: Picks 239, 243, 246, 252

Let’s jump into the action.

12:22 p.m.: Quarterback Ryan Finley will be a Cincinnati Bengal despite being tied as a potential Patriot and suitable developmental prospect behind Tom Brady. Much like Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta and the Patirots weren’t meant to be, Finley must not have been the Patriots’ guy.

12:34 p.m.: Florida safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson seemed like the type of versatile defensive back that the Patriots might like. And he had some pre-draft hype, with some pegging him as a potential first-rounder. However, the Saints nabbed Gardner-Johnson with the 105th overall pick.

Patriots Selection

12:57 p.m: The Patriots have drafted Arkansas offensive lineman Hjalte Froholdt with a fourth-round pick at No. 118 overall. Froholdt is a product of Bret Bielema, the former Arkansas head coach and current Patriots coaching assistant. More on that selection here.

Patriots Selection

1:31 p.m.: The Patriots have drafted Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham  with a fourth-round pick at No. 133rd overall. Tom Brady’s heir? Here’s more on the selection.

1:35 p.m.: The Patriots traded their third and final fourth-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams. The deal included the Patriots’ 134th and 243rd pick to the Rams in exchange for their 162nd and 167th overall picks, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

Patriots Selection

The New England Patriots traded up to select Maryland defensive tackle Byron Cowart with the 159th overall pick in the fifth round during the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday. He was a highly touted high school prospect that didn’t meet the hype in college. Here’s more on the selection.

Patriots Selection

The Patriots again traded up, this time selecting Stanford punter Jake Bailey in the fifth round. Belichick has trended toward left-footed punters but Bailey is a righty. He was asked about the punt-heavy Super Bowl this year. “It got me fired up,” he said on Saturday. “I remember watching the game and all of my friends were kind of like, ‘What the heck is going on,’ and I was glued to the TV. It was one of my favorite football games of all time to watch.” Here’s more on the selection.
