The Chicago Bears traded Jordan Howard to the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, leaving the team with a big 2019 NFL draft-day need at running back.
Fortunately, there are several talented prospects that GM Ryan Pace can choose from to fill the hole left behind by Howard. Here are four legitimate options.
David Montgomery, Iowa State
Montgomery is arguably the best running back in the 2019 NFL draft, and there’s a chance he could slip to the Bears in the third round, too. He’s fallen behind Alabama’s Josh Jacobs in the world of public opinion, but his contact balance and short-area burst are traits that scream NFL production.
Damien Harris, Alabama
Harris was the highest-rated running back at the start of the 2018 college football season, but his ho-hum year caused him to lose momentum entering draft season and has him entrenched as a Day 2 pick. His strong performance at the NFL Combine may have put him out of reach for the Bears, but with running backs expected to slide in this draft, he could be a pleasant surprise at No. 87.
Miles Sanders, Penn State
Sanders has a real chance at being either an early second-round pick, so if the Bears want the do-it-all running back who stepped out of Saquon Barkley’s shadow in 2018, they may have to get aggressive and trade up for him. If they somehow land this Nittany Lion, they’ll secure a three-down back with potential superstar upside.
Alex Barnes, Kansas State
Barnes is a throwback runner who likes to lower his pads and get physical with defenders. His size and athleticism combination reminds me a lot of Matt Forte, which is music to Bears fans’ ears. He can be had on Day 3, which is where Chicago may hope to find their next gem at the position.
