2019 New York Giants: Examining and predicting the final 8 games

It’s midway through the 2019 NFL season and the New York Giants sit near the bottom of the NFC with a 2-6 record. For those who like their silver linings, they are one game better than they were last season at this time.

There is still a lot of season left — eight games to be exact — and the Giants are hoping to duplicate last year’s second half performance when they went 4-4.

The Giants literally have no shot at making the postseason (a 1.4% chance), but they plan on trending upward in the second half. The adjustments to the defense and the return to full health of the offense could give them some opportunities to win some games.

Here’s a quick look of the next eight weeks.

Week 9 vs. Dallas Cowboys (Mon)

The NFC East, barring a late spring to life by the Philadelphia Eagles, is Dallas’ for the taking. The Giants will make some plays and get their shots in on offense in this game, but unless they make some radical adjustments, won’t be able to stop the Cowboys from gaining huge chunks of yardage in the passing game. They’ll lose this one.

Week 10 @ New York Jets

If you think the Giants are poorly run and coached, you haven’t looked across the hall to see what’s happening with the Jets. They are putrid on offense with a sub par offensive line, poor play selection and second-year QB Sam Darnold seeing ghosts. On defense, they still have no corners and with C.J. Mosely hurt, the Jets are doormats out there. Giants win.

Record: 3-7

Week 12 @ Chicago Bears

Perhaps one of the league’s most disappointing teams this season. It looks like their gambit at the draft a few seasons ago to snare QB Mitchell Trubisky has backfired. He is actually costing them games. The Bears’ inability to score (18.3 PPG) and move the football (281.4 YPG) gives the Giants a fighting chance in this one.

Week 13 vs. Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers will take one look at the Giants’ secondary and salivate. They can score in multiple ways and play solid defense with a turnover ratio of +7. They are too much for the poorly-coached Giants to handle.

Record: 4-8

Week 14 @ Philadelphia Eagles (Mon)

Expect to cringe a lot during this game because the Giants are a) terrible on national television and b) 1-7 against the Eagles on Monday Night Football. Philly has a lot of issues this season and are vastly overrated, but that doesn’t mean they can’t put these Giants away though.

Record: 4-9

Week 15 vs. Miami Dolphins

For a team that’s tanking they play pretty hard, but that doesn’t mean they’re still not the worst team in the NFL. The Dolphins seem to have a new plan every week and they are playing better football but the Giants should be able to take this game. If not, some serious evaluations have to take place.

Record: 5-9

Week 16 @ Washington Redskins

This will be the game in which much of the coaching staff will be evaluated on. A loss to this wreck of a franchise would be a huge kick in the pants. The Redskins are bad and the Giants cannot lose to them here.

Record: 6-9

Week 17 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles could put together a second-half run and make a season out of it but the Giants are 2-10 against Philly since 2013. This could be the spot where they turn things around.

Record: 7-9
