2019 NBA Draft: Celtics select Tremont Waters with 51st overall pick

The Boston Celtics selected former LSU point guard Tremont Waters with the 51st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, their final pick of the night.

A shifty lead guard with solid ball-handling ability and court vision, Waters isn’t a great shooter though he’s capable of knocking down shots off-the-bounce. The 2018-19 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Waters’ quick hands also could lead to him receiving regular minutes in a team’s rotation.

The 21-year-old Waters averaged 15.3 points, 5.8 assists and 2.9 steals per game last season while shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 32.7 percent from three-point range.

With the Celtics preparing for Kyrie Irving to sign with the Brooklyn Nets in free agency and restricted free agent Terry Rozier’s future in Boston in question, it made sense for the Celtics to stockpile point guard prospects. Before selecting Purdue’s Carson Edwards with the 51st overall pick, Boston didn’t have a point guard on the roster.
