The Falcons look dangerous again thanks to Hammond.
Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III is next on our list of Mountain West football’s 52 best players, coming in at #47 after giving the Falcons offense a shot in the arm last season.
The Academy had to shuffle between three quarterbacks because of injuries in 2018, but there’s little doubt that the option attack improved when Hammond III was under center. he finished the year with 374 rushing yards, a 48.8% Opportunity Rate and nine touchdowns, as well as a 5-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio and 8.7 yards per attempt as a passer. Perhaps most impressively, he also didn’t take a single sack.
So while Troy Calhoun tends to play things pretty close to the vest — Hammond and Isaiah Sanders are tied together with an “OR” on the most recent depth chart — and the Falcons must replace last year’s leading rusher, it seems likely that Hammond will be QB1 come opening week and lead the campaign back to bowl eligibility and more.
