Another year, another strong performance.
Our list of the Mountain West’s best players in 2019 comes to Fresno State strong safety Juju Hughes, who checks in at #12 after backing up an underrated 2017 with an equally proficient season last fall.
Hughes entered 2018 coming off a campaign in which, per Pro Football Focus, he played like one of the best athletes in the country. All he did to back that up was collect 78 tackles, eight passes defended, and four interceptions. No big deal, it just enabled PFF to tab Hughes as the top-rated safety in the Mountain West yet again heading into 2019.
In his senior season, the pressure will be on to replace the production lost by departures like Anthoula Kelly and Mike Bell. As the unquestioned best player in the Fresno State defensive backfield, however, Hughes figures to be as opportunistic as ever.
