2019 Melbourne Cup: Footage emerges of embarrassing brawl

An ugly brawl broke out at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, with racegoers wrestling each other to the ground in an embarrassing display at Flemington racecourse.

At around 5:45pm — after the day's races had completed — punches were thrown and shirts were torn as security tried to separate a group of five men.

One man continued throwing wild, misdirected punches until a woman had to physically drag him away from further confrontation.

Many onlookers chose not to interfere, one filming the farce on their smartphone.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, a Victorian police spokesman confirmed there were no serious injuries.

"The fighting had stopped when police arrived a short time later. There were no injuries and no formal complaint has been received."

The fight started after an Uber glitch stranded thousands of punters at the racecourse when the ride-sharing app went offline.

There were 81,408 racegoers at Flemington on Tuesday — the lowest attendance for the historic event since 1993.

Victoria Police made six arrests at Flemington — four for being drunk one for drug possession, and one on an outstanding warrant.

State and federal police will also investigate a drone that was seized due to unauthorised entry into airspace.
