The third round of 2019 Honda Classic wrapped Saturday with Wyndham Clark taking the lead at 7-under for the tournament.
Clark, who was 3-under 67 Saturday, recorded birdies of five of the first seven holes at PGA National, lifting him to 5-under for the day as he approached the eighth hole in the afternoon. He finished the round with six total birdies and three bogies.
Keith Mitchell, who shot even-par Saturday after ending the second round tied for first with Sungjae Im, challenged Clark for first place late in Round 3, but finished in a three-way tie with Kyoung-Hoon Lee and Vijay Singh for second at 6-under in the tournament.
Im struggled with water hazards Saturday, earning five bogeys and a double bogey on the second hole. He finished the third round tied at 31st after scoring 7-over par.
Singh shot a 5-under 65 Saturday with six birdies and one bogey on the ninth hole. The 56-year-old is chasing a piece of history this weekend in hopes of becoming the oldest winner in PGA Tour history. Sam Snead holds the title of oldest PGA Tour winner when he won the Wyndham Championship – formerly the Greater Greensboro Open – in 1965 when he was 52.
Singh, the 1999 Honda Classic champion, last won on the PGA Tour in 2008, when he won three times.
Rickie Fowler, the 2017 The Honda Classic champion, finished Round 3 in fifth place at 4-under 66 with five birdies and one bogey on the 15th hole.
First-round leader Jhonattan Vegas ended the third round in a six-way tie for sixth place along with Adam Schenk. Vegas finished Saturday 1-under 69 with three birdies, two bogies and a double-bogey on the 15th hole after his first shot landed in the water.
The PGA Tour announced Schenk was assessed a two-stroke penalty for violation of the new caddie alignment rule on the 17th hole during the second round on Friday. The penalty changed Schenk’s bogey on the par-3 hole to a triple-bogey. He finished Saturday 2-under 68.
Schenk, who was tied for eighth through four holes at the time of the announcement, finished the second round 1-over 71 with four birdies and two other bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes.
Justin Thomas, who was dealing with soreness from what he called a “dead arm” as a result of hitting his club on a follow-through against a tree Thursday, finished the third round 1-under 67.
