2019 free agent contracts: What Giants are paying new, returning players

The first wave of NFL free agency has come and gone with a flurry, which is the norm this time of year. However, 2019 had the added excitement of a slew of trades, which isn’t quite as normal but becoming far more common league-wide.

The New York Giants have been right in the thick of it, agreeing to a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns while also bringing in a handful of much-needed free agents.

Here’s a snapshot of what the Giants are paying each of their new and returning players (all numbers via Over the Cap)

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Safety Jabrill Peppers

Prior to being traded to the Giants, Peppers signed a four-year, $10,342,236 contract with $9,484,330 guaranteed including a $5,661,624 signing bonus in 2017.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $1,405,204
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 0.72%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $1,405,204
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 1.05%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.00
  • Total Contract Value: $10,342,236
  • Annual Contract Value: $2,585,559
  • Position Ranking: 41/180 at S
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $9,484,330

Peppers has two years remaining on his rookie contract, which breaks down for the Giants as follows:

Guard Kevin Zeitler

Prior to being traded to the Giants, Zeitler signed a five-year, $60 million contract with the Browns in 2017. That deal included $23 million guaranteed and a $12 million signing bonus. In total, there were $31.5 million in guarantees with most having come due last season.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $10,000,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 5.14%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $10,000,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 7.50%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.00
  • Total Contract Value: $60,000,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $12,000,000
  • Position Ranking: 2/78 at RG
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $23,000,000

Zeitler has three years remaining on that deal, which breaks down as follows:

Zeitler’s deal is one the Giants and general manager Dave Gettleman could look to restructure in the coming weeks.

Safety Antoine Bethea

The Giants signed veteran Antoine Bethea shortly after allowing Landon Collins to walk, and while the contract is for two years, the exact financial details have not yet been filed with the NFLPA.

The below information is projected and will be updated once details are made public.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $3,625,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 1.86%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $3,750,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 2.81%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.03
  • Total Contract Value: $6,500,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $3,250,000
  • Position Ranking: 34/180 at S
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $3,225,000

Based on projections, Bethea’s contract would be just a one-year deal with an essential option in 2020.

Wide receiver Golden Tate

The Giants signed Golden Tate to a four-year, $37.5 million deal with $22.95 million fully guaranteed. Tate’s base salary in 2019 and 2020 are both fully guaranteed, while his signing bonus was $10 million.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $7,500,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 3.85%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $15,000,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 11.25%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 2.00
  • Total Contract Value: $37,500,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $9,375,000
  • Position Ranking: 24/306 at WR
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $22,950,000

Based on contract structure, it’s clear Tate is in the long-term plan of these Giants. They could walk away in 2021 or 2022, but it would still be somewhat costly.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Edge-rusher Markus Golden

The Giants signed Golden to a one-year, $3.75 million contract with $2.225 million guaranteed. $1.5 million to the deal will be paid out on a game-by-game basis, while an additional $1 million in sack incentives was written in, increasing the potential value of Golden’s deal to $4.75 million.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $3,281,250
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 1.68%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $3,750,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 2.81%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.14
  • Total Contract Value: $3,750,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $3,750,000
  • Position Ranking: 31/112 at 43DE
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $2,225,000

Even if Golden maxes out his sack incentives, it’s still a very team-friendly deal.

Defensive lineman Olsen Pierre

There are absolutely no details available on Pierre’s pending contract as of yet, but this will be updated the moment they are filed with the NFLPA.

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Kicker Aldrick Rosas

The Giants tendered Rosas, an exclusive rights free agent, at one-year, $645,000, which was signed in March.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $645,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 0.33%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $645,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 0.48%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.00
  • Total Contract Value: $645,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $645,000
  • Position Ranking: 21/38 at K
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $0

It’s a very team-friendly deal for Rosas, but rest assured, he’s going to be a lot more expensive in 2020.

Fullback Elijhaa Penny

The Giants tendered Penny a one-year exclusive rights free agent offer that is worth $645,000. He has not yet signed that tender, but he will or be forced to sit out in 2019.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $645,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 0.33%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $645,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 0.48%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.00
  • Total Contract Value: $645,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $645,000
  • Position Ranking: 89/158 at RB
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $0

If the Giants decide to part ways with Penny for whatever reason, he would not carry any additional dead cap.

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Center Jon Halapio

The Giants tendered Halapio a one-year exclusive rights free agent offer that is worth $645,000. Halapio has signed his tender.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $645,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 0.33%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $645,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 0.48%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.00
  • Total Contract Value: $645,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $645,000
  • Position Ranking: 47/75 at C
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $0

Like other ERFAs, should the Giants decide to part with Halapio, it will not raise their dead cap.

Wide receiver Corey Coleman

The Giants tendered Corey Coleman at his original round — Round 1 — which he has not yet signed, nor will he for a little while.

Despite being a restricted free agent tendered at the first-round level, Coleman could still shop his talents in an effort to get another team to sign him, which would yield a third first-round pick for the Giants.

It’s unlikely, but possible. Assuming Coleman signs, here’s the breakdown:

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $2,025,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 1.04%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $2,025,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 1.52%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.00
  • Total Contract Value: $2,025,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $2,025,000
  • Position Ranking: 72/306 at WR
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $0

The Giants obviously intend to play Coleman or they wouldn’t be preparing to pay him in excess of $2 million.

Quarterback Alex Tanney

Tanney was signed to a two-year extension in early March, which is essentially a one-year deal with a team option in 2020. He was paid a $250,000 roster bonus on March 13 and can earn an additional $1.1 million in incentives (playing time and team wins).

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $1,112,500
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 0.57%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $1,075,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 0.81%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 0.97
  • Total Contract Value: $2,150,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $1,050,000
  • Position Ranking: 45/92 at QB
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $0

The numbers are relatively insignificant in 2019, but if Tanney has his “option” picked up in 2020, he gets a bit more expensive.

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Center Spencer Pulley

The Giants surprisingly signed Pulley to a three-year, $8,025,000 deal with $2,325,000 guaranteed. The contract includes $325,000 in gameday active roster bonuses, a $25,000 per year workout bonus and $450,000 in additional playing time incentives.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $2,600,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 1.34%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $2,675,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 2.01%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.03
  • Total Contract Value: $8,025,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $2,675,000
  • Position Ranking: 24/75 at C
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $2,325,000

The deal locks Pulley in for 2019, but the Giants have an out in both 2020 and 2021 if they want to part ways with the veteran center.

Cornerback Antonio Hamilton

There are absolutely no details available on Hamilton’s pending contract as of yet, but this will be updated the moment they are filed with the NFLPA.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Tight end Scott Simonson

The Giants made Simonson one of their early free agent priorities, signing him to a one-year deal in February.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $735,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 0.38%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $895,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 0.67%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.22
  • Total Contract Value: $895,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $895,000
  • Position Ranking: 47/152 at TE
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $65,000

Simonson’s deal is straight forward and contains both a pro-rated bonus and workout bonuses.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Cornerback Tony Lippett

The Giants re-signed Lippett to a one-year, $810,000 contract that has a base salary of $720,000 and various different incentives or bonuses. On March 25, he will be owed a $60,000 roster bonus and could earn an additional first-game roster bonus of $15,000.

  • 2019 Salary Cap Charge: $720,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cap: 0.37%
  • 2019 Cash Payout: $810,000
  • % of 2019 Team Cash Spending: 0.61%
  • 2019 Cash to Cap Ratio: 1.13
  • Total Contract Value: $810,000
  • Annual Contract Value: $810,000
  • Position Ranking: 94/306 at WR
  • Fully Guaranteed Money: $60,000

Save for the roster bonuses, the Giants have an easy out if Lippett is let go as a part of final cuts in September.

Long-snapper Zak DeOssie

The Giants will re-sign Zak DeOssie to a one-year deal, but the contract has not yet been signed and no financial details are known. This section will be updated once they are filed with the NFLPA.
