2019 free agency: Saints could get bargains from Bills

We’re advancing through our series profiling the free agents to know from each NFL team for the New Orleans Saints, who will explore all options to improve their team. Remember, this series updates daily and twice on Saturdays.

Pickings are slim with the Buffalo Bills, who have few unrestricted free agents in the 2019 offseason. But there are some players looking to move on after a year of sporadic offense and somewhat-consistent defense.

Unrestricted free agents

  • DT Jordan Phillips
  • OG Ryan Groy
  • OG John Miller
  • RB Taiwan Jones
  • OT Jordan Mills
  • WR Deonte Thompson

Options for the Saints

Defensive lineman Jordan Phillips is a big nose tackle (6-foot-6, 341-pounds) who had some nice moments in the rotation up front. He logged nine tackles for loss or no gain but didn’t make an impact on passing downs. Phillips also joined the Bills relatively early in the season, having been waived by the Miami Dolphins. The Saints put in a waiver claim for Phillips per Field Yates of ESPN, so they obviously have had some interest in his services. With so many potential holes in their own defensive line, the Saints may look at Phillips as a stopgap.

The Bills offensive line put up poor game tape throughout the year, and played as much a part in struggles to move the ball as rookie quarterback Josh Allen’s ineptitude. Still, the Saints will be in the market for some backups, so it’s possible right tackle Jordan Mills or right guard John Miller get some looks. Backup center/guard Ryan Groy is also an option. None of these players would be expected to start, and hopefully incumbent backups Cameron Tom and Will Clapp could fend them off. But the Saints do have a 90-man roster to fill out.
