The weekend is nearly here, which probably means a lot of time will be spent on fantasy football prep work. And we’re here to help.
Throughout the week, we’ve given you primers on running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. Last but not least is the quarterback position, where Patrick Mahomes exploded last year to be the leading scorer at the position.
That said, you may not want to reach for Mahomes given where he’s being drafted (we’ll get into that below) because the quarterback position is so, so, SO deep.
Here’s how to approach the position at draft time, along with sleepers and busts to remember:
Strategy
What I said above: QB is so deep you can afford to wait, and wait, and wait some more to draft one. My feeling is your first bunch of rounds should be focused on running backs first and wide receivers next. Once there’s a run on quarterbacks, that’s when you might think about jumping in and taking any of the names popping up in your queue, but you may have some trouble picking one over others because there’s a whole tier of them that could find their way into the top 10 in scoring by season’s end. Maybe the next couple of lists help.
Sleepers
Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles
He has SO MANY offensive weapons at his disposal. Now that he’s back at full strength, he may be better than his ADP (84th overall per Fantasy Pros).
Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers
How does this happen every single year? Rivers is undervalued and then has a terrific season. He’s QB17 in ADP and finished last year 11th in scoring among quarterbacks. See why you should wait on a QB?
Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys
He was so good when Amari Cooper joined the team, and let’s assume the Cowboys get Ezekiel Elliott the extension he wants. That’s fantasy gold. AND! He’s rushed for six rushing touchdowns in each of his first three seasons.
Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
Just going to leave this here:
Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bruce Arians is his coach now!
Busts

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
See above.
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
Don’t take him thinking he’ll be the same MVP-level QB he used to be.
Tom Brady, New England Patriots
Same. If the Pats run the ball more like they did to win another title, Brady’s stats will be pedestrian for fantasy owners.
