B-segment hatchback receives a new face, powertrain and infotainment in a bid to lure buyers from Japanese car brands.

MG Sales Thailand has given today’s MG 3 a comprehensive update including changes to design, engine, transmission and infotainment system.
The biggest alteration on the skin is the face of the car which now comes in line with other new models like the ZS SUV. The big front grille and head lamps are some examples.
The interior of the B-segment hatchback has also revamped with a new steering wheel and dashboard to accommodate the latest iSmart infotainment featuring voice control in Thai language.
A new petrol engine appears under the bonnet of the MG 3 that can sip E85 gasohol. Outputs for the 1.5-litre four-cylinder are rated at 112hp and 150Nm representing increases of some 6hp and 15Nm over the outgoing one.
Replacing the jerky five-speed automated manual gearbox is four-speed torque-convertor automatic with manual override.
There are four grades to choose from ranging from 519,000-629,000 baht, around 30-50k dearer than before. Even so, the MG 3 competes in the price vicinity of Ecocar-labelled hatchbacks like the Mazda 2, Suzuki Swift and Toyota Yaris.
Apart from the MG 3, the other B-segment hatchback that isn’t built to Ecocar rules is the Honda Jazz powered by 117hp 1.5-litre petrol unit and CVT automatic. The Jazz costs between 594,000-754,000.
