£200m Prince Philip royal yacht could be built at Cammell Laird in Birkenhead

The royal yacht set to be built and named after Prince Philip could be constructed at Cammell Laird - if the scheme gets the go-ahead.

Jake Berry, who is chairman of the Northern Research Group of MPs, has called for HMY Prince Philip to be built at the Birkenhead site.

It comes after reports this weekend revealed Prime Minister Boris Johnson was considering spending £200m on a new "national flagship" named after the royal, who died last month.

The costly vessel would be tasked with boosting British trade overseas by mooring near international trade fairs, as well as hosting trade negotiations, as the Liverpool Echo reports.

It’s thought the proposed HMS Prince Phillip would be seen as a successor to the mothballed Yacht - now moored in Edinburgh as a visitor attraction.

The Government has not denied the reports, with a spokesperson saying: "The Prime Minister has an exciting vision for shipbuilding in this country and is committed to making the UK a shipbuilding superpower.

"We are always looking for new ways to promote Global Britain around the world, driving investment back to the UK and delivering value for money for the British people."

The HMS Queen Elizabeth, an aircraft carrier, was sent on its first deployment last week.
