2000 jabs for Sydney food workers

NSW Health officials say around 2000 food workers came forward for jabs in a targeted event. (AAP)

Workers in the NSW food chain, from supermarkets to fast food outlets, made up many of the 2000 people who received jabs in a targeted vaccination drive on Sunday.

Health officials had urged food industry workers to come forward for AstraZeneca doses at the NSW Health Vaccination Centre at Sydney Olympic Park.

Many were workers from the eight most affected Sydney local government areas (Canterbury-Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Cumberland,Blacktown, Parramatta, Liverpool and Georges River).

Sydney Local Health District has now vaccinated almost 5,000 workers from Coles, Aldi, Woolworths, IGA, Foodworks and Friendly Grocer stores.

"We've had by far our biggest AstraZeneca day ever and we are so grateful to everyone for stepping up and protecting themselves, their loved ones and their community from COVID-19," the District's Chief Executive Dr Teresa Anderson said.

Pop-up walk-in clinics have been a drawcard over the weekend.

"At Glebe, almost 1,000 people attended over three days, with interest increasing rapidly from the first day, when 100 people attended. Most of the attendees were aged under 40 which just shows how enthusiastic people are to get vaccinated and help stop the current spread of COVID-19," Dr Anderson said.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) now recommends people aged 18 years and older strongly consider getting vaccinated with any available vaccine, including the AstraZeneca vaccine, based on the increasing risk of COVID-19 and ongoing constraints of Pfizer supplies.

The total number of vaccines administered in NSW is now 4,400,024.

Next week's targeted vaccination event will focus on construction industry workers and university students.
