200-year-old Ancoats pub demolished to make way for city centre apartments

A derelict 19th Century pub in Ancoats has been demolished to make way for dozens of flats.

The Cheshire Cheese pub on Oldham Road will be replaced by a new residential scheme which will feature a seven-storey building comprising 38 city centre homes when completed.

The scheme is called Deluna, which is a nod to Ancoats’ Italian roots, developers said.

The Cheshire Cheese is thought to date back to the 1800s and has long been threatened with demolition, the Manchester Evening News reported in 2018, with the North West Development Agency including it in a compulsory purchase order in 2001 as part of its plans to transform Ancoats.

New apartments planned for the current site of the derelict Cheshire Cheese pub on Oldham Road (UGC MEN)

Developers said the site is an “integral” part of Homes England’s regeneration into Ancoats, and the “final parcel of land” brought forward in the area.

Vanessa Warbrick, development director at investment firm Northhold Group, said: “This is a prime site in one of Manchester’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, so it’s great to finally get works underway and see the building demolished.

“It’s the final piece of the puzzle in the transformation of Ancoats, so it’s exciting to see Deluna taking shape and returning the site to positive use.”

Piling works are expected to begin this month, with ABGI Construction appointed as main contractor, developers said, with work expected to complete in December 2021.
