200 Liverpool homes left without power due to damaged cables

Around 200 homes were left without power last night due to an underground cable fault in Kensington.

The area around Parton Street was plunged into darkness shortly after 9pm on Sunday, with residents reporting a smell of "burning electric."

Crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called to the street where a cordon was put in place after smoke was seen billowing from a grid.

The incident was soon handed over to Scottish Power, with engineers working through the night to restore the power.

A witness at the scene, who asked not to be named, claimed the power cut followed another power outage just two days ago, at a similar time.

A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said the incident on Sunday was caused by an underground cable fault in the Prescott Road/Parton Road area.

Power for most of those affected was back on by midnight, while the remaining customers were restored at 4.30am at the latest.

In a statement a spokesperson said: "Due to an underground cable fault in the Prescott Road/Parton Road area, the power supply to around 200 customers was affected from around 8.45pm last night (31 January).

"Engineers were sent out immediately and worked through the night to restore power, with most of those affected back on around midnight and all remaining customers back on by 4.30am at the latest.

"Engineers are currently progressing permanent cable repairs and these will be completed within the next 48 hours. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused and thank all those affected for their patience and cooperation while we worked to restore supplies."
