Fantastic Fest turns 20 this year and one director has made her name known at the festival: Mattie Do! The director of films like the 2019 movie The Long Walk has attended the festival multiple times and in our celebrating of the women who have made Fantastic Fest special, we’re shouting Do out!
All three of Do’s films have had premieres at Fantastic Fest. Starting with Chanthaly back in 2013, Do has attending in 2013, 2016, and 2019. Which makes her one of the veterans of the festival on our list of amazing women. Her other films include Dearest Sister and The Long Walk and her latest film, The Sleeping Beauty, is set to bring Do back to the festival this year!
All of Do’s films so far have had a bit of a horror twist to them. Her previous film, The Long Walk, had a sci-fi element to it as well that really fits with the genre element of Fantastic Fest as a whole. But what makes Do so special is that she brings her work to the festival each time. And if you’ve ever gone to the festival, you know why that is relatable.
Fantastic Fest has always been a film festival that celebrates the weird, the out there, and the unique in cinema and so while it is fun to talk about, it is an entirely different kind of love once you attend the festival yourself. So Do making sure that her films are a part of the legacy of Fantastic Fest is pretty amazing.
We get to see her return to the festival this time around and we cannot wait to celebrate 20 years of amazing movies at this year’s festival. You can see our celebration of all of the women who have made Fantastic Fest special here.
