We are in the homestretch! Fantastic Fest, the beloved genre film festival that takes place each year in Austin, Texas, turns 20 this year and we’ve been celebrating with the 20 days of Fantastic Fest women and shouting out the women who made this festival special!
Today, we’re talking about Gigi Saul Guerrero! She is far from a first time attendee of the festival. Guerrero first attending Fantastic Fest in 2021 for the debut of her film Bingo Hell, which was her feature directorial debut! Since, she has attended in 2022 and in 2023 and it is amazing to see the work that she has done since her debut at the festival! She has directed on The Purge series, in the V/H/S series, and more!
The following year (after her debut,) Guerrero returned with her anthology Satanic Hispanics. Outside of heading to Fantastic Fest for her work, Guerrero also came to partake in their Fantastic Debates. In fact, she had so much fun doing it the first time that she came back the next year to do it again! And hey, if you could box like that, why wouldn’t you?!
The press release for the festival writes: “Filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero first attended Fantastic Fest 2021 for the world premiere of her feature directorial debut, Bingo Hell, and was a co‑director on the anthology Satanic Hispanics when she attended Fantastic Fest in 2022. In 2022 she participated in the Fantastic Debates and had so much fun that she returned to Fantastic Fest in 2023 just to compete in the Fantastic Debates once again.”
