Fantastic Fest is one of those places where men can claim it as a festival for them. Luckily, we have amazing women who have made it clear that women love genre films just as much! So today, we’re celebrating the Jezebels.
During the start of the festival, fans had clocked that there wasn’t a line at the women’s restroom. Meaning that the amount of women who attended the festival was significantly less than the men. Luckily, like in life, it became more acceptable for women in the genre film scene. Often, women are mock for our love of genre films, especially horror. So seeing the growth of women who love attending Fantastic Fest is special.
Which is where the Jezebels come into play. The idea of the Jezebels started after women became making their love for the festival known back in 2018 with meet-ups during the celebration. Called “The Jezebels Brunch,” fans joined together to celebrate movies and each other!
The festival writes: “As someone once noted, there never used to be a line at the women’s restroom during the fest, but now the Women’s restroom line is just as long as the Men’s line! Excitingly, women filmmakers, press and badge holders now make up nearly half of all attendees.Women at the fest have started their own meetups, such as the Jezebels Brunch in 2018 and 2019.”
So we’re celebrating the women who made it amazing throughout the years. The Jezebels helped so many others see that women love genre films just as much as everyone else and that’s pretty amazing! Maybe we can bring back the meet-ups together? A Jezebels brunch sounds like an amazing thing to bring back!
You can see all the women of Fantastic Fest we’ve been celebrating here! And get ready for this year’s celebration.
