20-year-old man jailed for string of robberies and car thefts in Edinburgh

A man has been jailed for a string of robberies and car thefts in Edinburgh earlier this year.

Ryan Kerr was sentenced to three years in prison at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday (Thursday 4 July) for offences that took place in the early hours of a morning in February.

The 20-year-old broke into a home on Priestfield Crescent and made off wth a Vauxhall Corsa, which was later found abandoned in Alnwick Road.

On the same night, he forced entry to homes in Alnwick Drive and Stanley Street in the Portobello area and threatened the occupants for the keys to their cars, which he then stole and crashed.

He then broke into another home in Portobello on Magdalene Gardens before stealing a handbag.

As well as facing jail time, Kerr was given a five-year disqualification from driving and will be subject to a 12-month supervision upon release.

Detective Inspector Jon Pleasance from Gayfield CID said: "Over the space of a few short hours, Ryan Kerr went on a housebreaking spree, which saw him disturb his victims in their sleep and rob them of their possessions, which included their vehicles.

"His actions caused great fear and alarm and a thorough investigation was conducted as part of Operation Arable, Edinburgh Division's ongoing campaign to target acquisitive crime offenders.

"The sentence handed to Kerr should serve as a reminder that such offences will not be tolerated and should you be involved in crimes of this nature, we will utilise all resources at our disposal to identify you and bring you to justice."
