20-year-old Bradleigh Kurt Williams drowned after jumping over 20ft at waterfall beauty spot

A 20-year-old died after jumping more than 20ft into water at a Welsh beauty spot, an inquest has heard.

Bradleigh Kurt Williams made the fatal decision at Pontneddfechan waterfalls, Glynneath , on Wednesday, July 24, during last summer's heatwave.

An inquest held into the death of Mr Williams, who was commonly known as Brad, heard how he had travelled to the area with his partner Amyleigh Tilley and her uncle David Pincott to enjoy a day out in the sunshine when tragedy struck.

Mr Williams, from Trealaw, was said to have jumped into into the water from a height after Mr Pincott.

A statement by Mr Pincott, read out in court read: “It was about 20 to 30ft above the pool.

“I remember him shouting out ‘yes’ however he soon started shouting for help and was struggling swimming.

"I got to Bradleigh and I remember feeling the current pulling us. "

What is an inquest?

Ms Tilley called 999 as soon it was clear Mr Williams was in trouble.

Giving evidence at the hearing on Tuesday she said: “I don’t think he had been there before. He had never mentioned it.

“My uncle said he had been there growing up as a child. It was a day out - it was just a tragic accident.

"We were going to go out for the day and go to the waterfall.

"It wasn't planned that we were going to jump - just a nice day out."

Dyfed-Powys Police attended the scene along with fire crews from  Swansea and Glynneath and paramedics.

Mr Williams was taken to the University Hospital of Wales but despite various attempts to resuscitate him he died later that day.

Giving evidence at the hearing, attending police constable Mathew Humphreys described seeing Ms Tilley and Mr Pincott.

"She was emotional," he said. "They both were. Both were shaking, both were crying."

A toxicology report found traces of cannabis in Mr Williams' system together with a "low concentration" of amphetamine.

When asked about his drug use, Ms Tilley told the inquest: “He smoked cannabis that day and had amphetamine the previous day."

She added: "I wouldn’t say he was stoned. He was fine."

Pathologist Margaret Sanders provided the proposed medical cause of death as that of drowning.

Delivering his conclusion, coroner Graeme Hughes said: "The drop was 20 to 30ft.

"He was seen before he went under water for 30 minutes or more.

"It seems to me that on all the evidence the conclusion is the death was one of misadventure.

"I don't look to blame Bradleigh at all.

"This was on a summer's day. Lots of people go swimming and lots of people take risks but they don't always have such severe consequences."
