20 things you need to know before a Bank Holiday trip to Ikea

While some may be spending the first May bank holiday of the year feeling slightly worse for wear, other will be getting ready to brave the shops.

IKEA is often the go-to store during a bank holiday so for anyone thinking of taking a trip there today we, together with the help of the team from moneysavingexpert.com , have rounded-up tips and tricks that will help.

They include little known facts such as being able to get someone to help you with the flat pack and how flexible its returns policy is.

1. You don't always need to struggle to get the things in the car

Yes IKEA does offer a delivery service, although many customers still don't realise this.

You can arrange to get items you pick up in store delivered by asking the customer service centre

2. Never worry again if you lose (or break) a part

You can actually get spare parts sent out to you.

And, it is simple to do too - you need to fill out a spare parts request form  here  .

If you no longer have the assembly guide, copies can be found in the product description on the website, but for much older products you need to contact customer services.

3. You can get free tea or filter coffee even refills

According to  money-saving expert Martin Lewis  , family card members can get a free tea or filter coffee on weekdays (norm £1) – better still, you get free refills on all drinks.

As with all Family member offers, you simply scan/swipe your card at the checkout. You only need one membership per group and there’s no restriction on group size.

4. IKEA's return policy may be better than you think

Shoppers can return products within 365 days.

IKEA will give you a full refund by the same method as your original payment for products that are returned with proof of purchase in new and unused condition and, if possible, the packaging.

5. And, it doesn't matter if the product is assembled either

Yes - even after you've struggled to put it together you can still return it for a full refund.

As long as it's in re-saleable condition, of course.

6. Don't rush inside, as everything you need is at the entrance

IKEA's entrance is where you will find pencils, paper, tape measures, store guides, catalogues, shopping strollers and shopping bags - everything for the ideal IKEA shop.

7. Get someone else to do the hard work for you

Let's be honest, every relationship has been tested by the invention of flat pack furniutre.

While it always seems a great way of saving money in store, when you get home and try to put it together it can be a very different story.

Thankfully IKEA has a service where you can book someone else to assemble your furniture for you. You can find more details about this  here.

8. You can even rent a van!

Unlike many stores, IKEA is aware just how many of its customers get easily carried away in its store and end up struggled to take all their purchases home. So you can now hire a van.

IKEA has now teamed up with  Hertz 24/7.

Prices start from  from  £13 per hour  or from  £40 per day  , plus the cost of fuel.

9. How to stay up to date with any product recalls

10. There's now a way you can avoid lengthy queues

Using Google’s free Popular Times feature, you can find out when your local Ikea store is at its busiest, helping you plan your trip better to avoid the queues.

11. ‘Try before you buy’ with IKEA’s virtual reality app for iPhone/iPad

We love this tip which was also shared by  Martin Lewis' team  .

The IKEA Place app uses your camera to create a virtual reality version of your room, where you can add Ikea furniture and accessories into your space to see how they’d look before you buy.

12. This is how you can save yourself A LOT of time

If you already know what you going to by from IKEA, check its location and aisle number on the retailer's website.

When you know this you can go through the back entrance, and honestly it will save hours.

13. The easy way to get discount on products

Ikea runs its IKEA FAMILY loyalty programme.

Anyone can join, and by signing up you can get discounts on furniture and other home products, food and services.

14. Bargain corner

Did you know IKEA has a bargain corner in each of its stores?

Bargain Corner is made up of products which may have a slight scratch on them, or were previously on the shop floor as a display model.

Or someone assembled it and then decided to return it - it all gets put in bargain corner.

It's the place where shoppers can bag a serious bargain, all products come with the same guarantees as brand-new items too.

We'd recommend taking at look each time you visit your nearest IKEA store as stock is updated each day.

15. Get an extra 10% sale items

IKEA FAMILY members automatically get this extra discount on all sale items.

16. Free product insurance for the drive home

When you buy any IKEA product using your family card at the checkout, you will automatically get free product insurance for 'accidental damage on the way home and during assembly'

This only applies to items bought in store and excludes Bargain Corner items, cut fabric and custom made goods.

If you need to claim, present your Family card and receipt in store within 90 days of the date you purchased.

17. IKEA may be bigger than you think

Despite IKEA feeling very Scouse , IKEA is by no means a UK thing.

Thanks to Ikeahackers website , one bride has revealed her genius trick that solves this dilemma and it is to use an IKEA carrier bag.

On the trick, the website says: "Well, I got married a few weeks ago (in a mermaid wedding dress) and I was really worried about going to the bathroom and not being able to … handle myself. Someone helping or watching me going to the bathroom on my wedding day? Not being able to have free hands to use the toilet paper?

While IKEA is loved for offering its customers stylish yet affordable furniture, its cafe is also popular.

Ikea's Swedish Meatballs are practically famous. A quick search on Twitter even shows many people going to IKEA just for its meatball.
