20 photos that'll take you right back to Liverpool in 2002

It's hard to believe 2002 was actually 20 years ago.

It was the year that saw Brazil win the World Cup, The Queen celebrate her Golden Jubilee marking 50 years on the throne and Canadian singer Avril Lavigne release her debut single, Complicated. In the Chinese Calendar, 2002 was the year of the Horse, a number of cast members from Stranger Things were born and we first saw actor Tobey Maguire take on the role of Spider-Man.

In Liverpool specifically, Speke airport was renamed in honour of John Lennon, the George Henry Lee department store was rebranded and Brookside was still airing on our screens. A lot has changed in the city in the last two decades, from the transformation of the city centre to how we shop, the clothes we wear and the events we attended.

But that doesn't mean we don't still look back with fond memories. We've delved into the archives to rediscover images of Liverpool back in 2002.

Some have been unseen for years and are bound to put a smile on your face. You can see them for yourselves in our gallery below.

A number of the images offer a glimpse inside Garlands and Quiggins that year. Others capture aerial shots of the pier head, a day at the races, festival-goers at Cream and a number of local businesses.

You can also spot Royals and celebrities, as well as football fans celebrating England's victory over Argentina during the World Cup. If you have any memories of Liverpool in the noughties, let us know in the comments section.
