$20 million in grants open for recreational fishing projects in the Hunter

A project by Port Stephens Council to install LED lighting around fish cleaning tables in the local government are, for which the council was awarded more than $8000 in Recreational Fishing Trust grant funding, was highlighted by Hunter Parliamentary Secretary Catherine Cusack on Saturday as the next round of funding opens for applications.

Hunter region fishers have been called to apply for the $20 million grant program that is funded by fisher license fees.

The grant calls for small project applications costed below $10,000 and larger projects for more than $10,000 and is open to fishing clubs, universities, councils, community groups and individauls.

"The funding could be used for new facilities, more fish stocking, research, and education programs," Ms Cusack said.

"If you've got an idea that will support fish habitats and recreational fishing in the Hunter then please, I urge you to get your application in."

Applications for projects close on October 30. Funding guidelines and application forms can be found via the NSW Department of Primary Industries website.

Meanwhile, Australian boaties, operators, skippers, and crew have been encouraged to consider the safety of their vessel, crew, and passengers, as part of the inaugural National Safe Boating Week, which began on Saturday.

The program is a joint safety initiative of the Australia New Zealand Safe Boating Education Group and its members from across all Australian states and territories and New Zealand, including the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the aim of which is is to increase safe practices and promote responsible boat ownership.
