2-year-old girl dies 4 days after hit-and-run in Irvine

June 15--A 2-year-old girl died Sunday after she was injured last week in a hit-and-run crash in Irvine in which her grandmother died, authorities said.

The girl, whose name was not released, was in a car Wednesday with her brother, mother and grandmother near Muirlands Boulevard and Alton Parkway when their Chevy Cruze was struck by a black Ford Mustang, according to the Irvine Police Department.

The grandmother, Katherine Hampton, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 7-year-old boy and his mother, 28, remain hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

The driver of the Mustang, Alec Scott Abraham, fled the scene on foot, police said. After a dragnet involving bloodhounds and California Highway Patrol helicopters, authorities found Abraham on Thursday afternoon in a Costa Mesa park, police said.

Abraham, 20, was arrested on suspicion of felony gross vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. He's scheduled to be formally charged and arraigned Monday.

A third vehicle, a black Honda Civic, also was involved in the collision. The driver of the Civic, a 44-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital and later released.

Authorities are looking into whether street racing may have played a role in the collision. Witnesses told police that a dark-colored coupe or sedan was driving at high speeds about the time of the collision.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Irvine police Det. Jonathan Cherney at (949) 724-7024.
