2-year-old colt named after ex-Giants QB Jared Lorenzen

Tracy Farmer, the owner of 2019 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston, will pay homage to the late Jared Lorenzen, who was a star at Kentucky and a Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants, by naming a two-year-old colt after the quarterback.

Farmer, who is a member of Kentucky’s Board of Trustees and a Kentucky football season ticket holder, says he will name the colt, which was bought in Saratoga last year for $205,000, “Lorenzen.”

“It’s the least we could do,” Farmer told Horse Racing Nation. “I think a great deal of him — the hardship and what he had to overcome. I admire him greatly.

“You never know what kind of horses these are. You know how that is, but I go to all the football games and was a great fan of his. It’s just in honor of him.”

“Lorenzen” is currently training in Ocala, Florida, but will soon be shipped to Louisville where he will make his racing debut, which is fitting given that Lorenzen made his Kentucky debut against Louisville in 2000.

Lorenzen passed away earlier this month at the age of 38 after a short battle with an infection and heart-related issues.
