1 killed, another wounded in Austin shooting: police

Chicago police investigate the scene where one person was killed and another wounded in a shooting, Friday night, in the 700 block of North Waller. | Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times

A man was killed and another wounded in a shooting Friday in Austin on the West Side.

About 11:38 p.m., 28-year-old Desmond Curry was standing next to a vehicle in the 700 block of North Waller Avenue when several males approached on foot and opened fire, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Curry was hit multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. He lived in Machesney Park.

An autopsy conducted Saturday ruled Curry’s death a homicide by gunshot wound to the torso.

The other man, 30, told investigators he was walking on a sidewalk when shots rang out, authorities said. He was struck in the back and taken to Loyola University Medical Center where his condition was stabilized.

He told officers he didn’t know the 28-year-old and was not with him when he was shot, authorities said.

Area North detectives are investigating.
