Two U.S. service members were killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said in a statement, according to Reuters.

Details: The mission did not immediately release details of the precise location or circumstances of the service members' deaths. It said their names were being withheld until 24 hours after the notification of next of kin in accordance with U.S. Defense Department policy, per NBC News.

The big picture: Their deaths bring the number of U.S. service member deaths in Afghanistan to at least 6 this year and a total of at least 65 U.S. military deaths since January 2015, Reuters reports, citing U.S. government and NATO data.

  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters Tuesday the U.S. had made progress in negotiations with the Taliban.
"[W]hile we’ve made clear to the Taliban that we are prepared to remove our forces, I want to be clear we have not yet agreed on a timeline to do so."
