Two teenage boys were charged with carjacking several ride-share drivers last year in Lawndale.

The teens, 17 and 18, were arrested Wednesday and both charged as juveniles in three carjackings stretching back to September 2020, Chicago police said.

On Sept. 20, they allegedly struck a food delivery driver in the face in the 1500 block of South Sawyer Avenue and stole his belongings and Toyota Prius, police said. The 32-year-old man was uninjured.

On Nov. 19, the pair were allegedly armed with a gun when they carjacked a 40-year-old ride-share driver’s Nissan Murrano in the 1400 block of South Christiana Avenue, police said.

On Dec. 30, the teens carjacked a third ride-share driver in the 1400 block of South Spaulding Avenue, police said. They allegedly pointed a gun at the 33-year-old woman before driving away in her Hyundai Sonata.

The teens, who weren’t named because they’re charged as juveniles, were expected in court Thursday on two counts each of vehicular highjacking with a firearm and one count of vehicular highjacking.

Also Thursday, police announced charges against a 17-year-old who allegedly shoot a man during a failed carjacking in Logan Square, and an 18-year-old charged in a West Garfield Park carjacking from December.

In January, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown outlined a plan to address the rise in carjackings, which more than doubled in 2020 over the previous year.
