2 Scottish men shot dead by 'masked man' at bar in Spain had criminal gang links

TWO Scottish men who reportedly had links with a Glasgow-based criminal gang have been shot dead at a bar in Spain.

A gunman reportedly fired several shots at Monaghans Irish Bar in Fuengirola, in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, on Saturday evening after the Champions League final.

It has been widely reported that the two men who were killed are Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan, who was previously acquitted of a notorious gangland murder.

Spanish media reported that a masked man pulled up outside the bar and fired multiple shots at around 23:00 and then fled in a vehicle.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Previously, Monaghan was linked to the high-profile killing of one of Glasgow's most notorious gangland figures – Kevin Carroll.

Carroll (below), an enforcer for the Daniel crime family, was shot 13 times as he sat in a car outside a supermarket in Robroyston, Glasgow, in 2010.

Monaghan was accused of the murder and of disposing of evidence after the killing, but was later acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

Monaghan was also shot in the shoulder in 2017 as he dropped off his daughter at a primary school in Glasgow.

He is reported to have moved to Spain shortly after.

Lyons Jnr had also previously been shot and wounded in an attack in 2006, believed to have been carried out by Carroll.

The Monaghans Irish Bar is located in a holiday destination and is popular with tourists.

The Diario Sur newspaper, which covers the region, first reported that Francisco Javier Salas, a local government official, said both victims were believed to be Scottish.

It has since been widely reported that the two men are believed to be Lyons Jnr and Monaghan.

The Spanish paper also reported that the gunman fled the scene after the shooting and that the authorities have mobilised a specialist violent crime unit to investigate the incident.

The Foreign Office has reportedly said it has not been approached for any consular assistance but that its staff stand ready to assist any British nationals if required.

Meanwhile, Police Scotland has reportedly said it is unable to comment on a possible link to a recent gangland feud in Scotland and has directed inquiries to the Spanish authorities.

A feud between the Lyons and the Daniel crime families, which has resulted in numerous violent attacks, has been ongoing for more than 20 years.
