Two Saudi climbers ascended Mount Everest, the world’s highest plateau, and hoisted the national flag of Saudi Arabia on its summit, reported the Saudi Press Agency Monday.
Saud Al-Eidi and Muna Al-Shihab reached the summit on Thursday after a 60-day trek. Several Arab and Gulf climbers were part of their expedition.
Eidi and Shihab have since returned to the Kingdom where they were received by Prince Bandar bin Khalid bin Fahd, Chairman of the Saudi Federation for Climbing, upon their arrival at King Abdulaziz International airport in Jeddah.
Eidi said that reaching Mount Everest took six years of training and planning.
“Our ambitions will not stop here and we will continue to exert efforts to reach other summits,” he continued.
Princess Rima bint Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi ambassador to the United States, who is also chairperson of the Saudi Federation for Special Olympiad, Yasmeen Al-Gahtani, Executive Manager for the Saudi Federation for Climbing and a number of officials were also present to welcome the climbers.
