2 plays about gun violence in Steppenwolf for Young Adults '16-'17 season

April 06--Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) has announced its 2016-17 season featuring two world-premiere plays, both responses to gun violence in America.

First is Caitlin Parrish's new play "The Burials" (Oct. 5-Oct. 22) in the Upstairs Theater. Erica Weiss will direct the "Antigone"-inspired drama about the upended life of a young millennial after her brother carries out a mass shooting.

Walter Dean Myers' New York Times best-seller "Monster" (Feb. 15-March 9) follows, in an adaptation by Aaron Carter in the Downstairs Theater. SYA artistic director Hallie Gordon will direct the story, told in the form of a screenplay, about a 16-year-old who faces a life behind bars after a robbery goes wrong.

The production will tour to three Cook County juvenile detention centers following its run at Steppenwolf, in collaboration with Storycatchers Theatre, an arts organization that regularly creates performances with marginalized and incarcerated young people. Storycatchers alumni will be featured in special events at Steppenwolf during the run.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is located at 1650 N. Halsted St.
