2 people die after emergency services called to house fire in Kirkby-in-Ashfield

Two people have died after a house fire in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed.

The emergency services were called to Forster Street in the town just before 7pm on Saturday, January 29.

Firefighters pulled two people from the house, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Crews from Hucknall, Mansfield, Eastwood, Chesterfield and Alfreton stations got the fire under control and extinguished it. Eastwood crews arrived at the scene six minutes after the initial call.

Members of the public described their fears as they were asked avoid the area at the time of the fire.

Patrick Breen, 78, who has lived in the opposite bungalow for the last 20 years, said: "I saw flames, they seemed to take quick.

"I then saw a lot of fire engines and the police. I didn't know what was happening.

"We've never had something like that really. We sometimes get anti-social behaviour but nothing like this.

"Most of us are old age pensioners on their own or in couples round here."

One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was told to leave her home and go to a local community centre.

"We were moved just in case sparks came off and it began to spread," she said.

Gladys Dear, 84, who lives directly opposite, said she "didn't see or hear a thing".

"I'm a bit deaf and I don't have any windows facing the front," she said.

"I'm very, very sorry to hear it. I'm just shocked. I didn't know anything, I just can't believe I lived through that and didn't know anything about it."

Nearby resident, Janice Johnson, 78, said flames were "going up left, right and centre".

She added: "I saw the smoke."

Area Manager for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, Bryn Coleman, said: "I would like to share my most sincere condolences with the family and friends of the individuals during this difficult time.

"My support also goes out to the personnel and agencies who attended this incident. I would like to praise and thank the crews for their quick work in extremely challenging conditions."

"Our Fire Investigation team have been working to determine the cause of this fire. We will be linking in with the Coroner to complete the report.

"We will be in the area to reassure local residents from Tuesday 1 February. If you have any concerns about individuals in your community, I would urge you to arrange a free Safe and Well Visit by calling 0800 022 3235 or through our website www.notts-fire.gov.uk"
