
Two people have died and 19 people have been injured after a Mexican navy ship carrying 277 people crashed into New York’s Brooklyn Bridge.
On Saturday (local time), a Cuauhtémoc — an academy training vessel — slammed into the iconic landmark, causing bits of the vessel’s three masts to partially collapse, the Associated Press reports.
The bridge itself was not damaged in the incident.
In multiple videos shared across social media, you can see exactly when the collision occurred.
In a post to X (formerly Twitter), the Mexican navy confirmed that “a mishap occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge”, preventing it from continuing its voyage.
“During the sailing manoeuvre of the Cuauhtémoc sailboat in New York, a mishap occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge, causing damage to the training ship, preventing the continuation of the training cruise for the time being,” the post said in Spanish, per ABC News.

“The status of personnel and equipment is being reviewed by naval and local authorities, who are providing support,” it penned, per Associated Press.
“The Secretary of the Navy renews its commitment to the safety of personnel, transparency in its operations and excellent training for future officers of the Mexican armada.”
In a separate post, NYC Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that two people died as a result of the injuries they sustained during the collision.

“Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge,” he wrote.
“At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries.
“We are praying for everyone on board and their families and are grateful to our first responders who quickly jumped into action, ensuring this accident wasn’t much worse.”
The mayor also confirmed that the bridge “sustained no damage” and that it’s now back open to the public.
Per ABC News, the Cuauhtémoc was scheduled to visit 22 ports and 15 nations.
