2 pedestrians killed in Northwest Side hit-and-run

Jan. 19--Two pedestrians were killed after being struck by a car on the Northwest Side on Saturday evening, police said.

Two men were crossing the street about 10:10 p.m. in the 4300 block of West North Avenue in the Hermosa neighborhood when a 2002 Buick hit them, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer. The Cook County medical examiner's office said Sunday afternoon that one man was 36 years old and the other was believed to be in his 50s, but the names released by the medical examiner's office could not immediately be verified.

The 24-year-old driver of the Buick sped away from the scene and crashed into three parked vehicles three blocks away at North and Kedvale avenues, Greer said.

One of the pedestrians was unresponsive at the scene. The second man was taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Greer said.

The driver of the Buick was taken into custody, and citations against him were pending, Greer said. The Major Accidents Investigation Unit was on the scene investigating the crash.

Police blocked off the intersection of North and Kildare avenues and the intersection of North and Kedvale.

The body of one of the men who was killed lay on the street at North and Kildare, covered by a white blanket.

Theresa Sanders, 45, said she went around the police tape on the way to a neighborhood liquor store at the corner of North and Kildare when she saw police cars and the body of the dead pedestrian.

"I thought it was construction tape," Sanders said, shaking her head in disbelief.

Sanders said she was disturbed to see the violent crash so close to where she lives.

"I've seen stuff like this on TV, but not in real life," Sanders said as she stood inside the liquor store. "I'm scared to go outside."
