2 pedestrians die following separate suburban accidents

Jan. 05--Two pedestrians were pronounced dead after being struck by vehicles in two separate suburban accidents, officials said.

A Chicago Heights man died of injuries he sustained when he was struck by a vehicle in South Suburban Park Forest, officials said.

Albert Valdez, 53, was a pedestrian when he was struck on 26th Street near Ash Street on Friday at 7 p.m., according to Park Forest police.

Valdez was taken to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights were he was pronounced dead at 7:35 p.m. Friday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An autopsy conducted Saturday determined that Valdez died as a result of injuries he sustained in the incident and his death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner's office.

Police said the accident is being investigated by police and the South Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending the conclusion of the investigation, according to police.

In addition to that accident, a 38-year-old woman died two months after she was struck by a minivan in northwest suburban Des Plaines, according to the medical examiner's office.

Alison Flosi of the 8900 block of Knight Avenue was a pedestrian when she was struck in the 1500 block of Miner Street in Des Plaines on Nov. 5, according to the medical examiner's office.

Flosi was pronounced dead at 10:02 a.m. Friday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, according to the office.

An autopsy conducted Saturday determined that she died of pulmonary thromboembolism, blunt force injuries to her lower extremities when she was struck by a minivan. A secondary cause of death was due to obesity, according to the autopsy which ruled her death an accident.

Information about the accident was not immediately available from Des Plaines police.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Flosi was injured recently near her home, but the Cook County medical examiner's office later corrected that information, and indicated she was injured in Des Plaines on Nov. 5.
