$2 million bond for man charged in accident that killed unborn child

Aug. 15--A 23-year-old man has been ordered held on a $2 million after being charged with reckless homicide in the death of an unborn child whose mother was struck by a vehicle Wednesday on the city's Northwest Side.

The 21-year-old pregnant woman was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night on the 6000 block of West Fullerton Avenue in the city's Belmont Cragin neighborhood. She was taken in serious condition to Loyola University Medical Center. The accident caused the death of her unborn child, police said.

Ramon Martin of the 3000 block of North Natoma Avenue was taken into police custody at the scene. He was charged Friday night with reckless homicide of an unborn child, aggravated reckless driving and other moving violations, said police.

In bond court Saturday, Cook County Associate Judge Adam Donald Bourgeois Jr. gave Martin a $2 million bond.

Prosecutors said Martin was driving over 100 miles per hour when police saw him, in an area where the posted speed limit was 30 mph. He sped through a red light and hit the victim's parked vehicle. She was seven months pregnant.

The impact of the crash pushed the pregnant women's vehicle over the curb and onto the parkway, where it struck a tree, prosecutors said.

The woman suffered a placenta abruption, which caused severe hemorrhaging and required an emergency c-section, prosecutors said. The victim needed a large blood transfusion and remains hospitalized, prosecutors said.

Martin was arrested at the scene and admitted to driving over 100 mph at the time of the accident, prosecutors said.
