Two men are facing prison time for allegedly using fake $100 bills at several businesses in north suburban Vernon Hills.

Filbert Elonge, 25, of Arlington Heights, was charged with four felony counts of forgery, the Lake County state’s attorney’s office said. Vernon Taylor, a 25-year-old from Chicago, was charged with two counts of the same.

Employees at a business in the 700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue called Vernon Hills police about 4 p.m. Monday to report that someone had tried using a fake $100 bill, prosecutors said.

Officers stopped the vehicle described by employees shortly after on Townline Road and found receipts from businesses Elonge and Taylor had previously visited, prosecutors said. They then went back to those businesses and found additional fake bills.

Elonge was held on $30,000 bond while Taylor was held on $20,000, prosecutors said. They are due in court August 1 and August 2, respectively.

If convicted, they could serve two to five years in prison, prosecutors said.
