May 19--Two men have been charged in an exchange of gunfire with police Monday night after officers heard gunshots in the Englewood neighborhood and tried to stop the suspects as they ran away, police said.
Jeremy Watts, 23, and Rasheen Crenshaw, 19, are charged in connection with the shootout in the 6100 block of South Laflin Street about 9:15 p.m. Monday, according to a release from the Chicago Police Department. Watts was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail in a hearing Tuesday in Cook County Bond Court.
Officers in the area heard shots and saw two people running with objects in their hands, police said in the release. During a foot chase, shots were fired at and by police, but no one was injured, police said.
One of the officers was injured when a suspect hopped a chain-link fence and the fence snapped back and hit the officer in the face and arm.
The officer hopped the fence and arrested the suspect, police said. The officer's injuries required stitches at a local hospital.
Officers blocked 62nd Street and searched nearby gangways and vacant lots. Two guns were found by police.
The shooting happened about a block from where a man was shot in the leg early Monday.
Watts, of the 5300 block of South Bishop Street, is charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting an officer and causing injury, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon on parole and unlawful use of a weapon. Crenshaw, of the 8400 block of South Escanaba Avenue, who who was scheduled for bond court Wednesday, is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful carrying of a firearm by a street gang member.
