2 McAllen police officers shot and killed while on duty

DALLAS _ Two McAllen police officers were shot and killed while responding to a call Saturday afternoon, The Monitor reported.

The McAllen news outlet reported that the officers, who have not been identified, were responding to a disturbance call in the area of Queta Avenue and 34th Street when they were ambushed and shot. A suspect at the scene was also shot, but their condition is unknown, according to The Monitor.

"We have lost two brave public servants who sought only to keep peace in our City," Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told the outlet.

Lt. Christopher Olivarez, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, told The Monitor that the agency sent DPS troopers to the scene around 4:30 p.m.

Information about what led up to the shooting was not available.

Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted their condolences to the city and the police department, and said that they will provide the McAllen Police Department with any support it needs.
